The Janitor Who Invented Hot Cheetos

Richard Montañez is credited with inventing Hot Cheetos in 1948. Despite facing numerous challenges and growing up in difficult circumstances, Montañez never let go of his dreams. His journey took an unexpected turn when he found employment as a janitor at the Frito-Lay company in California. He details his story in his autobiography, “Flamin’ Hot: The Incredible True Story of One Man’s Rise from Janitor to Top Executive”.

In the bustling corridors of Frito-Lay, Montañez’s imagination sparked a revolutionary idea – the concept of a spicy snack that would soon take the world by storm. The unlikely inventor poured his heart and soul into developing this fiery creation, drawing inspiration from his Mexican heritage and experiences. The movie Flamin’ Hot (2023) is based on the story of how Hot Cheetos were invented.

However, in 2021, The Los Angeles Times did a deep dive on the invention of Hot Cheetos called, “The man who didn’t invent Flamin’ Hot Cheetos,” and gave a quote from Frito-Lay corporate. The company stated, while they still celebrate Mr. Montañez’s contributions, he was not involved in the making of Hot Cheetos. In reality, Hot Cheetos were invented in Plano, Texas.

The Creation of Takis

A specific person is not credited with the invention of Takis, but rather, an entire company. Takis were developed and released by a company called Barcel in Mexico in 1999, coming to America in 2006. Since then, Takis have grown to be one of America’s favorite snacks.

Why Hot Chips Are Addictive But So Good!

The addictive and delicious appeal of Hot Cheetos and Takis can be attributed to a combination of factors rooted in food science. Firstly, both snacks capitalize on the “bliss point” concept, a term used to describe the precise level of sugar, salt, and fat that maximizes palatability and triggers pleasure centers in the brain. Hot Cheetos’ fiery flavor and Takis’ intense spiciness, along with the perfect balance of seasonings, contribute to hitting this bliss point, making them irresistible to consumers.

Moreover, the satisfying crunch of Hot Cheetos and Takis plays a crucial role in enhancing their desirability. Research has shown that the sensory experience of crispy snacks can lead to increased enjoyment and consumption. The audible and tactile aspects of the crunch trigger sensory-specific satiety, compelling individuals to consume more of these snacks to experience the same level of satisfaction.

Furthermore, the combination of artificial flavors and umami-rich additives such as monosodium glutamate (MSG) in Hot Cheetos and Takis heightens their savory taste. These flavor-enhancing components work synergistically to create a pleasurable eating experience that keeps consumers coming back for more, contributing to the addictive nature of these snacks.

Are Hot Cheetos Healthy?

Moderation is key when it comes to consuming spicy hot chips for the sake of your health. While the occasional indulgence can add a flavorful kick to your diet, excessive consumption may lead to digestive discomfort. Hot Cheetos come with a warning label for a reason—they can be seriously addictive! However, when paired with a balanced diet, enjoying spicy chips in moderation can be a tasty and satisfying addition to your snacking repertoire.

Spicy Chips in Scoville Units

The Scoville scale measures the spiciness or heat of chili peppers and spicy foods. However, it’s important to note that the Scoville scale is not typically used for snacks like Takis and Hot Cheetos, as it primarily applies to the heat of chili peppers and hot sauces.

Snack foods are not officially rated on the Scoville scale. The Carolina Reaper pepper is the hottest pepper ever since 2013, and ranks between 1.5 – 2 million Scoville units.
